20 years of Polish contributions to European fusion research

On 19 September 2025, the Polish fusion community marked a special milestone: the 20th anniversary of the Polish Association EURATOM–IPPLM, coordinated by the Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion (IPPLM) in Warsaw.

Since its establishment in 2005, the Association has grown from just five institutions to over a dozen partners across Poland, joining forces within the National Centre of New Energy Technologies (CeNTE). Today, Polish researchers contribute expertise in areas ranging from plasma–wall interactions, diagnostics, modelling, and neutronics to high-performance computing, materials testing, and advanced superconductors, as well as socio-economic studies.

Speaking at the anniversary celebration in Warsaw, EUROfusion Programme Manager Gianfranco Federici praised Poland’s achievements, highlighting the role of Polish laboratories and facilities such as the PF-1000U plasma focus device, the MARIA research reactor, and the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC). He emphasised how Polish teams have enabled Europe to remain at the forefront of fusion research through innovations in diagnostics, control systems, and data-driven approaches.

What began as a handful of groups has flourished into a thriving national network.

Today, Poland is an active contributor to almost all areas of the EUROfusion Work Programme, from tokamak exploitation to fusion materials development and preparations for ITER operation.

The 20th anniversary not only honoured past achievements but also looked to the future. With a rapidly evolving global fusion landscape, Polish researchers reaffirmed their commitment to the European roadmap towards a demonstration fusion power plant.

The EUROfusion Community congratulates for our Polish colleagues for their dedication work and commitment.
