DIFFER is the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research. Our mission is to perform leading fundamental research on materials, processes, and systems for a global sustainable energy infrastructure. We work in close partnership with national and international academia and industry. We are based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands..

On a daily basis, DIFFER employs about 170 people. Yearly, we welcome around 130 guest scientists. Our scientists, guests, and interns are facilitated by excellent technicians and support staff.

We are proud to host the fusion experiments Magnum-PSI, the Upgraded Pilot-PSI (for live measurements), and Ion Beam Facility (for non-destructive analyses). Magnum-PSI is the world’s only laboratory facility that can test materials under the extreme conditions of future fusion reactors. It generates intense heat and produces particles with high impact. With our Upgraded Pilot-PSI, researchers can do real-time measurements and dive into the first several hundred nanometers of material that are exposed to plasma conditions of fusion reactors. The Ion Beam Facility lets researchers study how materials evolve under harsh conditions. Scientists can, for example, analyze the properties of materials in a non-destructive way.
