The institutional headquarters of IFMIF-DONES will be located in the centre of Granada

The headquarters of the administrative, technical and economic management centre of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium will be located in the heart of Granada, in Puerta Real.

Thanks to the agreement signed between the Mayor, Francisco Cuenca, and the director of the Consortium, Ángel Ibarra, the City Council cedes to IFMIF-DONES the use of the municipal building located in Almona del Castillo street, next to the Isabel la Católica Theatre. The assignment is for 15 years, extendable. In the absence of the final project for the adaptation of the space, the building will have a room for administrative headquarters, another part for meetings for official receptions and a third room for dissemination and exhibition. “With this agreement, we have made Granada the place of reference for the future project, which although located in Ezcúzar, will have the brain of the future IFMIF-DONES España in the heart of the city”, explained Cuenca.

It is also envisaged that the future headquarters of the particle accelerator will become a space for dissemination through which “the people of Granada will make their own a project that is destined to improve life, as it responds to one of the great challenges of the world, which is obtaining clean energy through nuclear fusion”, he added.

For his part, Ibarra thanked the City Council for supporting this “relevant” transfer to facilitate “important objectives” for the Consortium. “The accelerator will be in Escúzar and the long-term people will work there, but we need a reference site to maintain and receive representatives from countries and institutions because moving them to Escúzar adds complexity. And also to have a dialogue with people to explain what we do and its benefits,” he said.

“When we are going to spend so much, we have to be sure that people understand what we are spending it for, so having a place to explain it was also important,” he said.

It will be operational in a few months. Once the facilities are adapted, the aim is “it will be open to the public and anyone can come in and ask questions”.
