The main decision-making body of EUROfusion, its General Assembly, has decided to make a total of 2.5 million euros in funding available to support the fusion research at its member the National Science Center Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT) and associated entities in Ukraine. The decision comes after an amendment of the Euratom Research and Training Work Programme 2021–2022 by the European Commission to enable support for fusion colleagues in Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s war on the country.
In addition to the funds for equipment and hardware, EUROfusion will take additional measures to directly support Ukrainian fusion colleagues. These will take shape in the form of two to three grants for young researchers or engineers based at the Ukrainian labs, as well as support for Ukrainian scientists who have been hosted at other EUROfusion members since the start of the Russian invasion.
The new support comes in addition to restrictions and measures that EUROfusion put in place against organisations in Russia and Belarus in March of this year.
